Sooo you’re going on your first ski trip! Well done you! You’re going to have the time of your life.

If you’re reading this post you probably have no idea what to buy for your first ski trip and that’s ok. I was exactly the same way this time last year, before I embarked on my first ski trip to Borovets Ski zone in Bulgaria. Luckily for me my Twitter followers pointed me in the right direction. Now, I’ll do the same thing for you.

I purchased most of my Ski gear from retailers like Amazon Prime, Ebay, Primark, Decathlon, & Sports Direct. Most of which were half price or less. Now that Ski season has officially kicked off it’s a great time to start making the most of them January sales. I have to be honest with you and let you know that Ski gear is EXPENSIVE.

It’s most definitely a luxury winter sport that is AFFORDABLE if you know how to stretch those coins. But don’t cut corners and be cheap. You’ll end up regretting it when those bogus ski clothes arrive. Do yourself a favor a purchase items from reputable retailers.

What to buy for first time skiers

COMPREHENSIVE TRAVEL INSURANCE

In this day & age there are many people out there who don’t buy travel insurance. Well, I’m here to tell you that you for your first ski trip full travel insurance. Especially as it’s your first time out there on them slopes. It’s better to be safe than sorry. So please get yourself on a comparison website and get covered.

Ski jacket

Ski trousers

Thermal ski socks,

Hat and scarf (buy as many required for the duration of your trip)

Invest in some good ski clothes! Not the one that look good but ones that comes with all the good stuff. When buying yourself ski clothing I’ve listed below some key things to take into consideration.

Please, please, please buy these items from reliable retailers none of those Ali-express vendors. I love me some Ali-express just not for Ski clothes. Also if you have wide hips like myself, I’de suggest getting a size up in your ski trousers and jacket because of the layers you’ll be wearing.

  1. WATERPROOF – 3000 mm-rated coating and partially-taped seams
  2. BREATHABILITY – Breathable fabric.
  3. WARMTH – Recycled wadding for insulation.
  4. ADJUSTABLE – Adjustable jacket bottom and cuffs, removable synthetic fur hood.
  5. WATER REPELLENT – Water-repellent outer fabric that does not get waterlogged.
  6. ADJUSTABLE – Adjustable jacket bottom and cuffs, removable synthetic fur hood.
  7. POCKETS – 4 pockets: 2 hand, 1 ski pass, 1 inner.
  8. USER COMFORT – Soft, warm collar for protection and comfort.
  9. EASE OF USE – Magnetic fabric flap to protect the top of the jacket zip from bad weather.

One more thing to remember be sure to grab clothing that has lots of comparments to hold things like your phone, lip balm and mini snacks.

Extra layers of thermal undergarment clothing to go under ski clothes are essential as they help to keep you warm.

Ski gloves/ Ski Mittens (waterproof)

There are so many options out there when it came to buying myself ski gloves. I was torn between mittens and gloves but I ended up buying ski gloves. I loved my gloves but I felt like they were a bit too thick. So be sure to buy gloves that are durable, lock in heat and are not on the chunky side.

Snow boots (optional)

Now I didn’t buy snow boots because I rented my skis and I knew I would be wearing them the majority of the time. Instead I took old Ugg boots to wear in between my Ski lessons. All you really need is a good pair of footwear that protect your feet, have strong grip and can be worn in snow conditions. Take a look in your collection you may have some footwear that fits this description. If not, feel free to grab a pair of snow boots from Amazon.

A neck warmer orr balaclava (optional)

Protective eyewear

Eyewear is a key item for your suitcase so do not leave this off your shopping list. I purchased both Ski goggles and sunglasses for my trip. I ended up really disliking the ski googles because they were uncomfortable and I didn’t feel confident wearing them while training.

After my first day of ski school I ditched my goggles and wore my sunglasses until the end of my trip. For first timers I would suggest getting a good pair of ski sunglasses that are comfortable. Make sure you try them on before you purchasing because you’ll save yourself time and money. Also keep an out out for the following key features on your protective eyewear.

  1. LIGHTWEIGHT – 26g
  2. SUN PROTECTION  – 100% UV filter: perfect for sunny weather.
  3. COVERAGE – Wrap-around shape: protects your eyes from wind, spray and inclement weather

Other key essentials

  • I also recommend that as a first timer you MUST hire your Helmet and Ski’s from Ski school or local hire facilities.
  • High SPF face cream, moisturizer &, lip balm.
  • Swimwear for the hotel hot tub, spa facilities etc
  • Comfy gym/yoga wear
  • Painkillers – After your first day of ski school your body is going to ache you’ll definitely need these.
  • Warm heat packs and muscle rub.
  • Comfortable and warm clothing such as leggings, loungewear, hoodies and long sleeves.
  • Light snacks to munch on during the day.
